The importance of safety at spectator events is because people could get crushed if there is no crowd control for example the Hillsbourough disaster where due to the lack of stewards, people started pushing forward and crushing people in front causing 96 deaths and 766+ injured. also stewards do have to take certain training courses depending on the type of event before they steward at the event. also there is a lot of dangers at spectator events; crushing, fights, drug use, alcohol abuse and there has also been cases of bomb scares. all these things need to be taken into account when stewarding. and also the location and what kind of event is being steward.

The services roles at a spectator event are for the safety offices and deputy safety officers ensure that the public at any event are safe
The Stadium Manager is charged with making sure events that take place where a stage is needed is safe by hiring the required staff, which is the other listed people responsible for safety.
The Chief Steward is in charge of every single other steward and must make sure they are briefed and understand what is required of them before and during the event. The Stewarding Supervisors must also aid in this.
The Emergency Services, such as the Police, Ambulance and Fire Service must all be at an event in some way to help with safety. They must all work in their role as usual.
Control Room Operators must work to monitor anything that is unsafe or dangerous to spectators, such as fire or another spectator becoming aggressive. They must then send the designated person to deal with the issue.

Some spectator event policies, such as the searching of people and ejecting people from the event affect the role of stewards because it means that they will have to take their job a lot more seriously and also comply with more rules.
It also means that they will have more rules to follow which means there is more chance of losing their jobs, and they can get into trouble where they wouldn’t have a few years ago.

The stewards should do a trial run of their equipment to check that they are working, an example is talking down a radio and making sure everyone can hear them. If there is a fault, they should take it to the person in charge, then exchange it for a working piece of equipment or have it repaired.

It is important for stewards to take note of information provided at briefings because it includes information specific to their role within their job and they may depend on it later on.

The stewards should know the location of basic facilities which the public will need. These include, the toilet’s, car park(s), first aid, emergency phone and exits. The stewards will need to know exactly where these are as they may be called upon to go to these locations in an emergency. For example, someone may have collapsed and a few of the stewards are assisting. They need the first aid kit which is at the first aid location. They need to know exactly where this is.

The different type of hazards that may be found at a venue could include broken glass, liquid spills, sharp objects etc. The stewards would have to deal with any of the situations for health and safety of the public.

The way in which the stewards would deal is they would control the perimeter and make sure there are no hazards. If there are any hazards then they would deal with it correctly.

The stewards should corner of the area that has the hazard. They should then use the correct PPE (Personnel Protective Equipment). This stops the stewards from getting any cut’s or wounds, deceases etc. They should deal with the hazard following all of the regulations they have been taught.

It is very important that stewards procedures when they identify hazards. With follow the procedures it ensures the problem is solved correctly, efficiently and complies with health and safety. Also by complying with the procedures then they will not get infected, or get anyone else infected.
